TSN takes ADSL2 bush
Chris Jenkins
November 30, 2004

ISP TSN internet is to take high-speed ADSL 2 to the country, announcing a new service that will offer residents of the NSW mid-north coast town of Taree download speeds of up to 26Mbps.

However, while TSN has installed Ericsson-supplied ADSL 2 Plus equipment in exchanges, the company will wait until the ADSL 2 Plus standard is formally ratified before offering speeds beyond the 8Mbps provided by the ADSL 1 specification, TSN spokesman Shane Southwell said.

"TSN is expecting ratification of ADSL 2 Plus to happen in early January 2005," he said.

"We will run our equipment at the normal ADSL 1 specification, which is 8Mbps second downstream. Then the day the specification is ratified by the ACIF (Australian Communications Industry Forum) we can upgrade speeds free for customers connected to ADSL 2-enabled TSN exchanges," he said.

To be available from December 6, the new ADSL 2 Plus-capable services should be able to provide up to 26Mbps close to the exchange, ranging out to 1.5Mbps at a distance of up to 4.5km, Mr Southwell said.

The highest speeds would be available within approximately 1km of the exchange, Mr Southwell said. TSN plans to use the bandwidth to provide streaming TV and radio services once customer numbers are sufficient. These would join the voice over IP telephony service already offered, he said.

ADSL 2 packages range from $29.95 per month 1GB plan up to a $49.95, 15GB offer, with download speed throttled back to 64kbps once caps are exceeded.

Port Macquarie will follow Taree in the rollout of ADSL 2-equipped exchanges. TSN has also set up a demand register and will extend the service to other areas when demand justifies it.

*Note - If you go to their website TSN Internet you can register your interest for the new lines. If they get 100 interested customers, the government will give them funding to get the exchange converted to handle ADSL2, so register your interest to help get us all connected to ADSL2. Also be aware when purchasing new adsl modems/routers that purchasing one with ADSL2 capabilities would be a smart choice. - Bek*
