Well, today sees the end of yet another year. Is it just me, or do the years just seem to pass quicker and quicker each year??? I must be getting old :(

Firstly, for those planning to go hard tonight, remember these words from your friendly MPU Admins: "Go Hard or Go Home!". But seriously, remeber to drink within your limits, and most certainly don't drink and drive. If you are looking for an agenda of activities for this evening, check out this schedule. Also check out the Sydney New Years Eve website for more details on things happening over the next couple of days.

So, what did 2004 bring us all as MPU-ers? First and foremost, a lack of lanning in the 2nd half of the year. In case you have been living under a rock, or are just new to MPU, our regular home (the Masonic Club at Parramatta) has been closed since July. The club was purchased by new owners, had to have some licensing details sorted, and is shortly about to commence renovations. We all hope the new and improved club will be open soon, with working air conditioning upstairs :)

2004 also saw some highly anticipated games being released - most notably the sequels DOOM3 and Half Life 2. Whilst some people predicted these titles would never make it to daylight, they were delivered, and they were good. Doom3 was one of the scariest games I have played in quite a long while. To whoever suggested to me that I play this game will all the lights off and the headphones turned up loud, you are a sadistic piece of work. Half Life 2 lived up to the hype. Put simply, this game is fantastic, if a little bit short on the single player side. But I guess that isn't where the future of HL2 lies. It'll be in the multiplayer and mod scene, for sure. Say what you will about the STEAM system, but it did allow me to purchase this game online, download the content(all 10GB of it - including all the other software: HL, CS, etc...) and have me playing in no time flat. Certainly easier, quicker, and cheaper than going to the store to get it. And the Source engine is truly awesome - the level of interaction with environmental items in games these days is what I have been wanting for a long time.

It seems that overall, lan parties have been getting smaller and smaller. Mainly due, I feel, to the increased availability and adoption of broadband internet access. For LAN parties to survive, they need to do more than host some game servers to ensure their continued success. MPU acknowledges this, and we will be planning some big and exciting things in the new year.

Enough of a rant. Given that my linux kernel on my other workstation has just decided to go into panic mode (bloody bleeding edge hardware), I best show it some tough love, and fix it up.

To everyone, thank you for your support of MPU in 2004. For the entire admin team, we wish you all the best in the new year - hope you can all stick to your new years resolutions, and we will be back next year *FOR SURE*.

The colour red and mitsubishi huh?

Ahh those were the days.

Well I worked NYE and kept repeating to myself "It's just another friday night, another friday night!!" Well at least till I heard what we all gather around the harbour to see each year, yes the 'Blowing up the bridge ceremony'.
Unfortunately the bridge didn't collapse this year so we'll have to wait and try again next year. Thankfully I can report there was no loss of life but it does give credit to the building standards of the earlier half of the 19th century.
Alas when I did hear those fireworks go off over the harbour so did my illusions disappear and the truth hit me. Only those who stood close to me could hear the little mumblings under my voice of "Fek fek fek i'm at work fek fek."
