Well, to balance out last weeks bad news, here's some good news!

The next MPU is on the 16th of July, and Regos are now open. So sign up, and sign your friends up - it's going to be a blast. We'll be having a lot of BF2 action, as well as Trackmania and UTOpen.

Also, a new poll is now up regarding how often MPU should be run - go and have your say.

I'd say MPU should be run every 2 months, because there isnt much new stuff to leech every month passing. So 2 months would almost guanrantee some new leechage to happen.

It's not about the leeching, it's about the games.. the comps.. gettin' together with friends and lanning. :)

Sharing linux distro's and shareware programs is just a sideline to the fun. ;)

yeah and for when you need a break from getting your arsed kicked in css coz you know your such a noob coz you cant practice 18hrs of the day...

The purpous of a lan is compleatly the individual's choice, i think its a little unfair to call a person a noob coz they leach... sure if they suck at games call em a noobs and they deserved to be pwned...

and that is that NOW SIGN UP PEOPLE...

Oh yeah and mpu should be run every month none of this 2 month bs... i mean cmon for some people its their monthly social outing.... ohhh no thats not fair...

cmon people sign up sign up i dunn wanna miss another mpu...
*twitches from mpu withdrawal*

Leechers @ LAN's are n00bs. Talk it up being an individual well this is my individual opinion.

As much as you want to think paying your entry fee means you some how are allowed to make leeching a legal activity because you do it by choice doesn't make it right. The lan is there as a social event. A get together of people who enjoy playing games and hanging out with other people with similar interests.

Leeching over the last few years killed gaming at LAN's and it's why i've not turned up to any LAN for a long time because there were to many people doing the wrong thing (including myself at times) compared to those there for the proper reasons.

If it was something i had control over i would ban leeching at a LAN. Of course we all know there would be a massive drop in numbers at any LAN as a result of such a move so really nothing can be done without a damaging effect on that LAN. SGL for example took the initiative and made the sharing of adult material a banable offensive (i think that was the punishment). I think at one stage they also limited or blocked certain client/server sharing applications but that could of been a rumour, i wouldn't know for sure.

hopefully this month more ppl will rego so we can get some bf2 action going

unfortunately its been again scheduled for same day as sgl, this will seriously affect the attendance, for the sake of the LAN and the attendees please next month (or the one after if the poll goes awry) try to get them on different dates >.<

"SGL for example took the initiative and made the sharing of adult material a banable offensive "

Someone should remind the sgl admins then, because it definately wasn't the case at the sgl that just passed.

Ferahgo, as we didn't find this venue utill April, we had to take what dates they had available :/

The next one is scheduled the same day as SGL as well....

Next year we will aim to no clash dates as often (hopefully)

I really didn't think there were people so thick as to not understand a 'hint' when they see one.. Here is a suggestion, denote all obvious statements with an asterisk '*'

For the benefit of Dave and Tidus (I think Ill call you Idiot1* and Idiot2* from now on..), any LAN seen to be advocating piracy, let alone facilitating it would draw the kind of attention from the authorities that would probably make the organisers think twice about being involved.

Obviously the larger the LAN, the more opportunity for piracy would present itself, thus the chance of attention being drawn to this LAN would rise.. Especially with 'individuals' proclaiming it is their right (regardless of what the organisers have taken as their official line) that they can leech to their hearts content.

I don’t think that all file sharing will be eliminated from LANs (obviously I am talking about patches, etc..), but it should not be highlighted as one of the reasons for turning up. I personally think seeing crap like that diminishes the scene as a whole just because a few chuckleheads are too stupid to know when to keep their mouth shut.

Here’s a word for you –

Discretion: knowing how to avoid embarrassment or distress; "the servants showed great tact and discretion" [syn: discreetness, circumspection, prudence]

Do me a favor please.. read it again and tell me where i was advocating the act of leeching..

Here is what it was ment to say in its simplist form..

"At a lan people will do what they want to whether that be Leech or Game.."

Forget the noob part you were right about that..

Cmon i didnt think it was that complex and Dogma there is no need to be so patronising or condescending. It didnt seem as though you took it in the way it was ment to be taken which is fine, but there isnt really need for calling someone an idiot when you can get your point across fairly well without that as Gen did.

And yes i understand both your points of view and i also understand the view of those who dont think the same of leeching as you fellas do.

But as i am sure you guys understand the moment we stop allowing leeching numbers drop and then we have a repeat of this month every month unfortunately...

So really its a double edged sword with no clear answer in sight.. and that is the unfortunate truth

If I didn’t use condescension, or arrogance as part of my prose, then I don’t think I would have any writing style to speak of (infact, using the word 'style' when referring to the trash I write, could be construed as more arrogance on my behalf..)

Any-hoo, while you said that I didn’t need to call you an idiot to get my point across (you are of course right, I just like calling people idiots), it seems I should have used smaller words..

My point is that no matter what, the organisers of MPU cannot be seen to be endorsing leeching.

I am not saying they don’t do it.

I am not saying they don’t endorse it.

I am saying they cannot be seen to endorse it on the forums, or at the LAN or the ‘powers-to-be’ may target them for investigation. I think the threat of organisers being investigated and held partially responsible for any piracy occurring at the LAN they organise would be a big enough deterrent to make most people think twice about putting a LAN together.

No organisers, means no LANs.

And while copyright enforcement may have been more relaxed, I think it is definitely becoming more and more aggressive. I know a number of people that have been contacted by their ISPs saying that their IPs had been traced by authorities, and that they would have no hesitation in handing over the appropriate information to the authorities if they didn’t cease and desist in their file sharing activities.

So knock yourself out – start a DVD piracy empire for all I care, but have the brains and consideration enough not to do it here – selfish as it sounds, when I eventually come back to Australia, I would like to come back to MPU to play games..

Dogma

ps. I dont really have that strong a moral view on leeching, just on the repercussions of doing it.

I'd take MPU over SGL..

Fully catered and licensed bar (which was open last LAN) in the same room as the lanning hall + venue with pool tables and bistro.

Wooooooohoooooooooooo!!!!

16th July is an away game for the Swannies.. So that means (with the permission of my lovely wife) I will be attending... Probably with Child V1.0 as well. Looks like I'm up for double this month.

Oh and I vote for once a month as close to the 15th as you can get it... just like in the old days... Or better still why don't you make it the third Saturday in the month so at least then SGL will know when MPU is on and you can both work out a comprimise to get the numbers. Rather than you both hawking for the same people on the same day.

i don't think it'll be that easy to avoid SGL's days. the Club has several other clients that use the function rooms that MPU gets held in. booking dates for the function rooms on short notice will be very dicey.
